UNITED ARAB EMIRATES – In the heat of the summer

 In Cars

Yes, we did it – we went to the UAE in the summer!

After visiting the Emirates twice before in the cooler winter months, we always wondered: what is it really like in the heat of August and September? Would it be the unbearable humidity we experienced in Malaysia and Singapore, or surprisingly tolerable? And how does daily life shift when the desert sun is at its strongest?

This time, we also wanted to see the UAE from a different angle. The world knows the country for its glitz and glamour, its soaring skylines, and its record-breaking ambition. Dubai alone feels like a place where the impossible is routine: man-made islands, the tallest building on Earth, hotels that look more like kingdoms.

But the UAE is more than one city. Beneath the shine, a cultural renaissance is unfolding – museums, mosques, galleries, and heritage sites that reveal a deeper side of the country. That’s what we set out to explore.

And because so many friends and readers sent us the same questions during our trip, here’s a quick Q&A, followed by our recommendations for Sharjah, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, – and yes, even a stay in the desert.

Quick Q&A

So, how hot does it really get? You can’t be outside, right?
It gets hot – no denying that. During our trip (late August to mid-September), nights hovered around 32°C, and daytime reached up to 45°C. But humidity was lower than what we’ve felt in Malaysia, making it surprisingly tolerable. And since you spend much of your time in hotels, malls, attractions, or cars – all designed with the climate in mind – the heat doesn’t stop you.

Is it less expensive in the summer?
Yes, especially hotels. Rates are noticeably lower, and flight prices can also be more favorable. However, restaurants, attractions, and entrance fees remain the same.

Can you enjoy the beach and water?
Yes, but it’s not the “refreshing dip” you may be hoping for. The sand is hot, and the Gulf water feels more like a bathtub. Most hotels chill their pools, though, which is wonderful. Locals usually head to the beach in the late afternoon, when it’s more pleasant.

And – The Desert!

Yes, even in summer. We spent two nights at the breathtaking Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara, often called a palace in the desert. Far from the crowds, it was a magical way to unwind. Huge pools, an amazing breakfast buffet and dining options, sunset activities, and a sense of tranquility that only the desert can provide – the perfect finale to our UAE journey.
